Letter Regarding Saskatchewan Health's decision tendering of pharmaceuticals in Saskatchewan.

June 21, 2021 I am contacting you to express concern about the decision of the Saskatchewan Health Authority to discontinue the long-standing arrangement with our local Pharmacy to provide service to our long-term care home. Why was a tender from a pharmacy in Outlook, Saskatchewan accepted to supply our long-term care home in the future? Our residents are questioning this decision and we cannot get any information to answer their questions. Can your government positively answer the following question? I am addressing the newest changes in SHA’s pharmaceutical distribution contract. SHA may be saving some money on drug costs but having one location dispensing prescriptions 100 km from the health centre in Craik is denying our residents a service that they already have. We all know there will be cost for transportation and it will have to be added on, who is going to absorb these costs? Many of the residents in these homes are on limited income or social assistance, either way where will they (or the Saskatchewan government) find the extra money for the courier services/administration fees involved in the transportation of their prescriptions. What can the Craik health centre expect for services coming out of Outlook? Obviously, it won’t be daily-weekly, monthly? What if one of the residents has a prescription change and it falls outside the delivery date, how long will they have to wait to receive their prescriptions? Have you taken into consideration the ramifications of taking away the services of these small-town drugstores? I’m hearing everything from laying off of staff, closing down one day a week to losing a pharmacist position. I would like these questions answered, the residents of Craik would like these questions answered. With the loss of business resulting from this decision will Mel’s Pharmacy in Craik, Saskatchewan close and residents will have a further decline in service? I request that your government put this tendering process on hold and review the decision. I await your timely response.
